Locally, these festive baskets were traditionally used mostly by the Peranakans or Straits Chinese for carrying wedding gifts, the larger ones being called siah nah (fortunate baskets) while these smaller ones (in other variant shapes as well) were called huat nah or abundance baskets.  Nowadays, they are mostly called siah nah in general and are very popular as decorative items during major Chinese festivals like the Lunar New Year.

Our small imported red, black and gold lacquerware Chinese festive baskets have a dragon and phoenix in raised bas relief embossed on the cover, which makes them quite exceptional as wedding gifts for young couples or when displayed with other symbols of prosperity and abundance like oranges, melon seeds, or groundnuts, lovely festival decorations.
