Our wedding jewellery boxes were traditionally given to new brides as part of their bridal trousseaus. The tiered drawers were meant to allow the display of the various gold ornaments gifted by her relatives and the relatives of the groom. Girls from wealthy homes or those marrying into wealthy families often had a whole tableful of these boxes, all open and crammed with rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces to show off to guests on their wedding days.

Even today, the tradition is for the parents of the wedding couple, aunts and uncles to give jewellery before the customary tea ceremony, with red packets stuffed with cash are only dispensed at either the tea ceremony or the wedding dinner itself.
