This type of small Chinese wooden water buckets with hand-painted rustic Chinese floral motifs often appeared in Shaw Brothers costume dramas based on Chinese history or folklore. They were almost invariably carried by the heroine or her maid and were slung on a bamboo pole on one shoulder, hence the curious handle.
